The proud record of having six sons in the army is held by Mr and Mrs William Slade of 35 Katesgrove Lane, Reading, who received a letter of congratulation from King George. The six sons are Lce. -Corpl. Reginald Slade, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, and Private William Slade, Canadian Contingent (later Royal Berks Regiment) each of whom was wounded; Pte. Francis Slade, 1st Batt. Royal Berks regiment, Private Ernest Slade, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, Pte. A.E. Slade, 5th Batt. Royal Berks Regiment and Sergt. A. Slade, late 41st Welsh Regiment, drill instructor at Reading Barracks. William Slade and A. Slade also fought in the South African war.
