BELGIAN DAY IN READING.
£551 from the Sale of Favours.
OUTSIDE THE COMMITTEE ROOM, FRIAR STREET.
The sale of favours in the Belgian colours was a method of raising funds for Ihe relief of refugees and several Berkshire towns adopted the idea . in REading, following the lead of Maidenhead, Belgian Day dawned and ended in a blaze of red yellow and black, for fom 6 am to six pm an army of ladies was about the streets. Sums ranging from a penny to a sovereign were paid in exchanged for a favour and 75,000 were sold.In twelve hours people of all classes subscribed £55 to one of the worthiest of schemes, alleviating the sufferings of a cruelly wronged and courageous nation.The Rev. P.N. Harrison, the honorary secretary and Mr Russell Brain, the honorary assistant secretary, were congratulated.
