W h ile Berkshire w as bidd in g good -b y e t o u n its o f
th e Regular and Territorial Forces of th e cou n ty, it
w as g re e tin g oth e r regiments w hich camped or billeted
w ith in its borders.
N ota b le am ong th ese w as th e
Queen' s Own Oxfordshire Hussars, w ho m arched from
Oxford , and som e o f whom w ere b illeted on R ea d in g
residen ts in the Kendrick Road d istrict fo r a few days.
T he regim ent, w hich is equivalent to th e Berkshire
Yeomanry in status, w as cord ia lly w elcom ed and k in dly
trea ted , residen ts d oin g all in th eir pow er t o m ake
its stay pleasant.
T he regim ent w as soon afterwards in th e th ick o f th e fightin g, h aving th e h onou r
o f b ein g on e o f th e first Territorial regiments t o go on
activ e service, and in its first en gagem en t a cq u itted
itse lf w ith such g a lla n try and steadiness as t o earn
th e th an k s and com m en dation o f th e Divisional Chief.
N ew s o f th e ir e x p loits g a v e m uch pleasure t o th ose
Reading fo lk w hose hospitality th e y had received a few
w eeks before.
