39th (late3Sth) DIVISIONAL SIGNAL COMPANY ROYAL ENGINEERS.

The Mayor of Reading (Mr. Leonard Sutton) was asked to raise this unit of
His Majesty's Forces in the early part of the year 1915. It soon reached
establishment strength and attracted an excellent class of men. Captain R. L.
Pearson, commanding officer of University College O.T.C., and first secretary
of the Reading Recruiting Committee, was gazetted to the command of the Company,
and proved an able officer, one who was liked by all ranks and could draw
the very best work out of them. The Company was first stationed at Wantage
Hall, in the neighbourhood of which the recruits carried out exercises under
expert direction. They included, of course, motorcyclists, wheelwrights, carpenters
and shoeing-smiths, in addition to telegraphists, and under Coy. Sgt. Major
Fludder and a staff of Regular instructors, and made good headway int heir
duties. Most units have a mascot, and that of 'the39th' is a sagacious
retriever, the property of Second Lieut. Eustace Sutton, one of the three soldier
sons of the Mayor of Reading. In due course a second company was formed and
was stationed at Wantage Hall while the 39th were continuing their training
in camp.

CAPTAIN R. L. PEARSON.

COY. SERGT. MAJOR FLUDDER.

THE OFFICERS, N.C.O.'s AND MEN, ALSO THE MAYOR.
