Mounted Territorials Training at Bear Wood.
T he second line of the Berkshire Yeomanry and Royal Horse Artillery w as
encamped from September, 1914 , to May, 1915 , at Bear Wood, on the estate of
the Walter family.
Gen. Pole-Carew inspected the troops at an early stage of
their training and complimented them on their excellent progress and their
military bearing.
Riding, trench digging, rifle shooting and sword exercises
were carried out at or near the camp, which occupied a healthy position, and
being w ithin easy w a lk in g distance of Reading was very popular w ith the troops.
