OUR SAILORS IN THE DARDANELLES.
Five of these portraits are those of Reading men who were on H.M.S. Irresistible in
March, 1915, when, with H.M.S. Ocean and the French battleship Bouvet, she was sunk
during the bombardment of the Dardanelles forts. Few of our sailors were lost, but more
than 700 Frenchmen went down with their ship. The portrait is also reproduced o f a
Reading man whose ship, the light cruiser Amethyst, performed such a brilliant exploit
on March 13th. She steamed at full speed up the straits as far as Nagara and cut off
communication between two of the enemy’ s forts. Twenty-two of her men were killed and
thirty wounded.
