th e Royal Horse Artillery and the
Trans ort and Supply Column, w ere
in sp e cte d by his M a jesty th e K in g
at Churn. The scene o f th e review
w as m ore in terestin g than th e date,
fo r ou r m on arch traversed grou nd
on w hich Alfred o f Wantage led th e
valian t men o f Berkshire t o ba ttle
again st th e in va din g Danes cen tu ries
a g o and saw his fo rce s victoriou s.
S ix thousan d troops, rep resen ting
th e m ou n ted Territorials o f several
cou n ties, paraded fo r th e royal re
view , and th e scene on th e Fair Mile,
n ear Churn, w as a m em orable one.
T h e sun shone b rig h tly from a
clou dless sky and th ou san ds c f
peop le assem bled on th e h istoric
grou n d . F o u r B rig ad es w ere drawn
up in lin e all alon g th e Fair Mile,
and on th eir rig h t stood fou r batte rie s o f th e
Horse Artillery. A rrivin g a little a fte r 11 a .m ., the K in g
rod e all along th e line, and a fter insp ectin g th e a rtille ry to o k up his
position on Lowwbury H ill.

o f all w ho had th e p rivilege of particip a tin g.
