R e g im en t w ho w ent t o th e seat of w a r in the
da rk days of A u gu st, 1914.
I t was taken a
few m inutes b e fo re th ey le ft Aldershot for
Southampton, when th e fu tu re held such grim
secrets and th ey knew th a t it w ould alm ost
certa in ly be th e last ph otog ra p h tog eth er.
W ith in a fo rtn ig h t, du rin g th e critica l re
treat, Captain Shott was killed at Maroilles,
w here Major Scott Turner w as w ounded and
ca p tu red by an a trocious a ct o f German
treach ery.
In th e same en gagem en t th e
Berkshires helped to delay th e advance of the
enem y hordes w ith fine heroism and Lieut.
Fullbrook -Leggatt earned th e D .S .O . b y lead
in g his m en alon g a b ullet-sw ept road in an
a ttem p t t o regain a bridge.
Subsequently
th e ba tta lion lost b y death Lieut. Perrott,
a fine cricketer, son of Major-General Sir
Thomas Perrott ; C apt. Birt, w ho had w on th e
D .S .O . fo r skill and cou ra ge at Villers Cotterets, w here th e B erksh ires saved th e g u n s ;
and Second Lieut. Perkins, w ho u nder deadly
fire was leadin g his m en w ith th e dauntless
spirit and u n w averin g g a lla n try w hich dis
tin gu ish ed th e officers of th e Berkshires and
e n title them t o u n d y in g fam e.
