SPECIAL CONSTABLES' FIRST PARADE.

CITIZENS ASSIST TO POLICE THE COUNTY TOWN.

The Special Constables of Reading,
like the Police Special Reserve
of Berkshire, are rendering public
service of a valuable character in
these anxious times. They have
guarded railway bridges and other
positions at all hours of the night;
they have worked while others slept
and incurred the discomforts inseparable
from a lonely vigil in all
winds and weathers - and all this
they have done willingly and
gratuitously from a high sense of
duty and with no expectation of
reward. Lately the 'Specials'
have increased our indebtedness by
undertaking patrol duty as auxiliaries
of the Borough Police Force.
Under the direct charge of the
Chief Constable (Captain Henderson)
and Chief Inspector Lickley,
they are invested with the duties
and powers of the paid constable
and are liable to be called upon to
go on duty during all hours of the
day and night. On patrol duty the
'Special' wears a cap and cloak
of the traditional blue; he has been
taught jiu-jitsu, and besides being
instructed in the art of self-defence
he has been tutored in the resuscitation
of the apparently drowned,
in first aid and in other useful
branches of humane service which
have made the British policeman
the finest in the world. There are
400 members of the auxiliary force,
whose keenness and ability have
earned them the title of 'Extra
Specials' and whose ranks include
many busy tradesmen and professional
men, including clergymen
magistrates, aldermen and
councillors.

THE SPECIAL CONSTABLES OF READING PARADE FOR INSPECTION BY THE MAYOR, WHO IS ACCOMPANIED BY THE CHIEF CONSTABLE
AND ALDERMAN FIELD.

THE MAYOR COMPLIMENTED THE FORCE ON ITS GENERAL BEARING AND ACKNOWLEDGED ITS SPIRIT OF SELF-DENIAL.
