AMBULANCE VOLUNTEERS
THE TRANSPORT OF PATIENTS TO HOSPITAL
Patients are conveyed from
the railway stations to the
Reading War Hospital by the
Berkshire Voluntary Aid Transport
Service, the organisation
of which is undertaken by the
Berkshire Automobile Club.
Motorists were asked to lend or
present cars for conversion into
ambulances, and the general
public were invited to subscribe
funds for buying ambulances
and for maintaining a
regular and ample service of
these conveyances. On arrival
wounded or sick Tommies are
received by members of the
13th Berks Voluntary Aid
Detachment, who act as
orderlies and whose neat blue
uniforms relieved by a white
armlet bearing the red cross
stand for skilled and ready
service whenever needed.
