Much as they were attached to the county capital, the 7th and
8th Berkshires left with that exhibition of cheerfulness so typical of Tommy Atkins at all times. Most of the goodbyes had been said before "The Day", but the Mayor and other friends went to the station and expressed the good wishes of the town. There was joyous singing and hand-waving as the train drew out of the station, to which drifted back the famous strains of "Tipperary".
The Young People's Society of Carey Baptist Church, Reading assisted by friends, gave a farewell super and concert to 75 of the soldiers who had been billeted in that district and were under orders to move to fresh training stations.
