Volunteers' Athletic Sports
THE first sports meeting of the 1st Batt Berkshire Volunteer Regiment, held at Cintra, Reading on September 22nd 1915, afforded an afternoon of enjoyment to participants and spectators alike. Our first picture shows the finish of the quarter-mile flat handicap, in which the runners were graded according to age. The winner was Mr. J. Parr, who is 69, and whose success over younger comrades evoked applause. A spice of humour was lent to the sports by such contests as the bandsmen's race, in which they bounded along making all sorts of unmusical sounds with their instruments, and the cornet player beat the big drum.
