Son of a Berks Militia colour- sergeant who served in the Indian Mutiny, he has served in the 5th Lancers, the South African Constabulary, Berks Yeomanry (S.Q.M.S. of B Squadron), Durban Light Infantry and Imperial Light Horse (S.S.M.), fought in the Transvaal (1900) and German S.W. Africa (1915) and now trains cadets in Johannesburg.
