GREAT GIFT SALES AT READING.
Extraordinary prices for live stock were made at the gift sales held at Reading on Saturday, April 29th, Monday, May 1st, and Wednesday, 3rd, in aid of the Agricultural Relief of Allies Fund, The Meat and Allied Trades Red Cross Fund and the Royal Berks Hospital. A fat Heifer from Mr. J. H. Benyon, sold and resold 162 times by the Right Hon. the Earl of Northbrook, realised altogether £551 9s. 0d., and a heifer and calf from Mr. W. M. Colebrook, sold by the Mayor (Mr. Leonard Sutton), ran the record closely, receiving bids aggregating £529. The amount received from the auction sales, donations, catalogues, prize tickets, draws, etc., was£4,123 3s. 3d. The total expenses amounted to £172 1s. 7d. The balance was allotted as follows: - Agricultural Relief of Allies Fund, £2,370 13s. 2d.; Meat and Allied Trades Red Cross Fund, £1,185 6s. 6d.; Royal Berks Hospital £395 2s. 0d. Figures like these are eloquent enough of the great support enjoyed by the undertaking, the object of which was to give much-needed financial help to three beneficent works. High and low co-operated in the common cause, either by making gifts or by buying lots. The initial bid was made by Lord Reading, whose initial speech warning the people that even greater sacrifices lay before them made a great impression. Heartiest congratulations are due to all associated with the scheme, especially to the committee, which was composed of leading auctioneers and meat purveyors and which was so admirably serves by the Hon. secretaries, Mr. E. Duncan Fraser and Mr. B. Marley.
