GALLANT ROYAL ENGINEERS.
SOME MILITARY MEDALISTS.
Sapper A. T. GODDEN, 103170, 32nd Division Signal Co., R.E., attached to 14th Infantry Brigade
Headquarters, has been awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous bravery. The circumstances are as
follows
On the night o f 13th July, during an intense
bombardment and attack by the enemy on the
Lombardzide sector, when the telephone lines to
the battalions in the line had been broken, Sapper
Godden, assisted by Sapper J. W. Wing, ran out a
new line, and in so doing had to cross a bridge over
the Yser Canal, which had been broken by enemy
shell fire, and was kept under a continuous fire by
the enemy. There was only one beam remaining
across the gap. The air was densely charged with
gas the whole time, and he was unable to take off
his mask for an instant. He continued to work
under almost impossible conditions and at great
danger, and succeeded in getting his line through,
thus enabling important information to be sent
back and instruction forward. The official docu
ment states that he showed great personal bravery
and devotion to duty.
Sapper Godden was presented with the ribbon of
the Medal by the Corps General, Earl Cavan, the
whole Brigade being on parade for the occasion.
