CANADIANS AWARDED MILITARY MEDAL

On witnessing such a ceremony as that performed at the Canadian Convalescent Hospital, Bear Wood, on March 8, 1917, when two of the patients were publicly presented with the Military Medals they had won, by Major-General Turner, one realises the full significance of the term "awarded the Military Medal."

The first recipient was Lce.-Corpl. Karl Hendrick Vroom, 26th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force, who joined the C.E.F. on June 28th, 1915, and has seen two years and four months service. The award was made "for scout work done at the Somme after the capture of Courcelette in the Sugar trench and the reserve, locating companies and obtaining information necessary for the organisation of new positions."

Pte. Harold Wright Bickerstaffe was then decorated. Pte. Bickerstaff belongs to the19th Batt. C.E.F. He joined the C.E.F. on December 5th, 1915, and his length of service is one year ten months. "The crew of his machine gun were 50 yards in advance of their front line when a shell burst and fell in the trench. He carried on for 24 hours alone until attacked by Germans. He opened fire and was wounded himself."

General Turner addressed the men.
