INSPECTION BY THE COUNTY COMMANDANT.

b y Col. 0 . P . Serocold , C .M .G ., V .D ., th e County Commandant
, and addressed b y Colonel Wilson , D .S .O ., M .P . T he in
spection to o k pla ce a t Calcot Park in th e m ornin g at th e kind
in vita tio n o f Lord Rosslyn , and th e fa c t th at th e w eath er was
a b o u t as bad as it cou ld b e len t a rea lity t o th e proceedin gs,
and th e Volunteers, in th e drench ing rain, w ith ou t grea t coats,
b y th e ir ch eery dem eanou r g a ve evid en ce th a t th ey are m ade
o f th e rig h t m aterial.
T h is w as th e first parade o f th e Calcot and Englefield platoon
, fo r w hich L o rd Rosslyn has d o n e so m uch, w ith th e
Reading Companies, and th ey a cq u itted th em selves q u ite well.
In deed, th e soldierly appearace a nd sm artness of th e m en
gen era lly called fo rth h ighly com plim en tary rem arks from such
seasoned soldiers as Colonel Serocold a nd Colonel Wilson .
In add ition t o Colonel Serocold and Colonel Wilson , th ere
w ere presen t L o rd Rosslyn , Mrs. Wilson , th e Mayor of Reading
(M r. F . A . Sarjeant), C apt. Miller, M rs. Mayall, Col. Hodgson
(and his d o g ), Capt. Porter, w hile th e Volunteer officers
in cluded Colonel Kelly , Capt. Guthrie, adjutant, Capt. Kingham , Lieutenants Oades, Wrottesley , Kent, Bray, Marriott,
Plant, Miller and Cumber. O ver 180 members o f th e Reading
Companies paraded, th e to ta l b ein g 234.
