T h e Germans g r e a tly e x a g g e ra te d the
losses o f th e British in killed, w o u n d e d and
p rison ers d u rin g th e e a rlie r d a y s o f th e
offensive w h ich b e g a n o n March 21st, 1918.
T h e 56th Division , th e ir wireless communique stated,
w as “ a lm o st c o m p le te ly
w ip ed o u t .” T h e a ctu a l ca su a lties w ere 43
officers an d 1,425 o t h e r ranks.
T h e 5th Berks Regiment was d e cla re d to h a v e b een
“ a n n ih ila t e d ” ; t h e a ctu a l t o ta l losses
w ere 15 officers an d 300 o th e r ranks.
