WOMEN OF THE LAND ARM Y
The Forage Department, Army Service Corps, a
small section o f which passed through Heading in
August on their way from Suffolk t o Newbury, is
employed in the task of baling hay for the Army
The women em ployed are not members of the
Q.M.A.A.C., but form a section o f the Land Army.
They are, (however, under the W ar Office and subÂ
je ct to military discipline, and work with men of
the Army Service Corps. Each gang consists of six
women and three men, under a superior officer. In
their green hats, overalls, gaiters and serviceable
boots, th e women are a fine workmanlike corps.
They have com e out, some from factories and workÂ
rooms, some from a life o f leisure, to do their bit
for their country, and right well they carry out
their task. They are ou t at all times o f the year
and in all weathers, are sent aibout the country at a
momentâs notice, sleeping in billets, working late
and early. It is a rough life, perhaps, but a good
one; a life worth living just now, when every
woman's duty is to do all she can to serve her
native land. These women, have taken to the open
road, they are browned by the sun and wetted by
the rain, but surely they have their reward. They
know that in taking their share o f hardship with
valiant hearts they are helping the men who have
the harder part to play in the trenches; they know
that they are helping to make history at a moment
when that history is o f more vital importance than
at any other epoch.
