A very pleasing ceremony took place on Monday morning, April 7th, 1919, at the Depot Barracks, when Col. Colebrooke Carter, as Hon. Colonel of the 1/4th Battalion, attended a parade of the 1/4th cadre in Barracks and welcomed all ranks home after four years on active service in France and Italy. Colonel Carter joined the 4th Battalion (1st Volunteer Battalion as it was then) in 1868, as Captain and Adjutant. He became Lieut.-Colonel in 1891 and Lieut.-Colonel Commandant in 1895, and resigned in 1898, having served for thirty years in the regiment. In 1917 he was appointed Honorary Colonel of the 4th Battalion. Col. Ewen, who accompanied him, has been in charge of the depot of the 4th Battalion ever since mobilisation, having rejoined the battalion on the outbreak of war, and, including three years on the Reserve, has been connected with the regiment for the last 35 years. On the call of Col. Whitehead, after the ceremony, three very hearty cheers were given as the Colonel left the parade ground.
