The treatm en t m eted ou t to
the officer prison ers was n ot bad, but
th a t o f th e T om m ies was simply
w icked. T he food situ ation in Germany
w as very serious, th e civilian po p u la­
tion livin g alm ost en tirely on roots
such as tu rn ip s and m angolds, b u t the
soldiers at th e fro n t are fed b etter.
T h e p o ta to crops in Germany were
very poor.
Col. Gibbs has served in th e same
regim ent for a bout 32 years, and was
aw arded th e C .B . in th e first lis t of
war honours in 1915. In December o f
1917 h e was sent t o Holland for internment.
