SPECIAL CONSTABLES AT CHURCH.

On Sunday, November 3rd, 1918, a number of Reading special police constables paraded on the lawn of ST. John's Vicarage, by invitation of the Rev. W. Britton, B.D., and, accompanied by Capt. Henderson, the Chief Constable, and the Mayor ( Mr. F. A. Sarjeant), marched to St. Stephen's Church, the occasion being the monthly service for men.

The preacher prefaced his address by a few words of welcome to the specials present. Unfortunately the pestilence was in their midst, and their numbers were reduced, but that was one of the things that could not be helped, and must be endured. Anyway, he was glad to see so many of them; he appreciated their presence just as, as a citizen, he appreciated their services. Taking as his text Jeremiah v., 1, "Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgement, that seeketh the truth, and I will pardon it", the preacher delivered an eloquent address on the subject "Wanted - a Man". He said the German superman, of whom they had heard before the war, was really a subter-man, not a man possessing any high qualities of soul; he was at the best a most effective animal, to whom right and wrong were but meaningless terms, making wrong right and right wrong, just as matter of convenience, because he was thinking solely of the interests of the State, and thus confused justice with expediency.
