In the presence of Mr C.R. Butler, the Divisional Food Controller, Mr E.O. Farrer and Mr F.W. MARSH of the Reading National Kitchen Committee, the Rev. H.P. Pope, vicar of Pangbourne, and Mrs Pope, Major-Gen. Waddington, Mrs Hamilton Smith, Mrs Mortimer Menpes, Mr Pitney, representative of the Bradfield Rural District Council, and other residents, a National Kitchen was opened by Mrs Tate on Thursday May 23 rd 1918. The building was an old refreshment house known as "The Donaldson" and the name has been retained. The main room is large with tables down the middle and sides, and fifty people could be seated.
A number of paintings on the walls were lent by the Contemporary Art Society, secretary Mr Butler.
