1st BATT. ROYAL BERKSHIRE REGIMENT.
The Gallant Berkshires.
Congratulations and Thanks of Reading Citizens.
At a meeting of the Reading Town Council on Friday, November 15th, it was decided to send the following letter, signed by the Mayor (Alderman Stanley Hayward) to the Officer Commanding th 1st Royal Berkshire Regt., B.E.F., France:-
On behalf of the Council of the citizens of the County Borough of Reading, I tender you and the officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the 1st Royal Berks Regiment hearty congratulations on the successful issue of the fight for right in which you have been engaged, and sincere thanks for the great gallantry and wonderful patience with which, during the long period of war, you have sustained the honour of England and of the Royal County whose name you bear.
[photo, portrait] Pte. ERNEST JAMES WISE, 68, Blenheim Rd., Reading. - Seriously wounded (second time).
[photo, portrait] Pte. C. WELLER, of Rutler's Farm, Whitchurch Hill. - Wounded for the second time.
[photo, portrait] The late Pte. J. W. COX, Wokefield Green Mortimer. Died of wounds.
[photo, portrait] Pte. A. COWDERY, 70, Mount Street, Reading. - Right leg amputated.
[photo, portrait] The late Pte. JOHN CALLINGHAM, son of Mr. and Mrs. Callingham, Bracknell, who died as the result of being badly gassed and burned.
[photo, portrait] The late Pte. C. WAKEFIELD, Montrose Villas, Hurst. - First reported missing, later reported killed or died from wounds.
[photo, portrait] The late Lce.-Corpl. V. GREEN, Wesley Mill, Binfield. - Killed In action.
[photo, portrait] The late Pte. H. J. STACEY, transferred to 8th Batt., 37, York Road, Reading. - Killed in action.
[photo, portrait] The late Pte. GRIFFITH JONES, Oakhurst, Goodchild Road, Wokingham. - Killed in action.
