The Mercantile Marine
A Submarine Victim
The late ROBERT MITHVEN DEADMAN, youngest son of Mr Mra E.B. Deadman, 28 Manchester Road, Reading, wireless operator. Drowned while serving in the Mercantile Fleet. The vessel was torpedoed and broke in two. This was deceased's first trip. He was educated at Kendrick and Reading Schools. Aged 17.
Clever Dog Collector
"Spot" belonging to Mrs Baldwin of the Vine Hotel, reading, has collected £33 for various charities, including Reading War Hospitals Care and Comforts Committee, the "Reading Standard" Hospital Shilling Fund, Reading Blue Cross Day, National Relief Fund and the Serbian Relief Fund. Nearly all the money collected has been "halfpenny touches"
Family's Proud Record
Three Generations in the Army
The family of Mr HESKETH of 33 Addington Road, Reading, himself an old soldier and the possessor of the Long and Meritorious Service Medal, has a proud record.Five of his sons are or have been serving, and five grandsons and three sons in law.
HONOURING THE BRAVE
In the Market Place, Reading on November 27 th 1917, Sergt. W.H. RIDLER R.G.A. of Bristol was publicly presented with the D.C.M. Brigadier General E.A.W.S. GROVE, C.B. is seen pinning it.
