POSITION OF DISCHARGED SOLDIERS.

To the Editor, READING STANDARD.

Sir, - I have been asked by several men discharged from the service through wounds or sickness to state their position under the Military Service (Review of Expectations) Act, and if you would be good enough to grant the courtesy of your paper, to do so through the Press, as I understand there are many cases in which doubt exist.
The question put to me is whether a non-commissioned officer or man who has been re-examined under Army Council Instruction No. 643 o- for which was issued in connection with the Review of Exceptions Act, and who is given a discharge paper endorsed with the statement that he is discharged in consequence of being re-examined and found permanently and totally unfit for service can be re-called for further examination under the Act.
In order that there should be no misunderstanding, I put a question to the Ministry of National Service, and also asked if a man, so situated, could, under any regulations, be re-called for further examination. Yesterday I received the following reply:-
"An officer, non-commissioned officer or man given a discharge certificate after medical examination under the Military Service (Review of Exemptions Act, 1917, showing that he is permanently and totally unfit for military service, is not liable under any statute or regulations to be re-called for medical examination or for military service.
Yours very truly,
LESLIE WILSON. House of Commons, January 24th, 1918.
